Ashley joined Theatreplan in 2017, having spent almost all his working life in the theatre industry, in a wide variety of roles. He has experience of an extensive range of theatrical and artistic performance related venues and productions.
Ashley’s proactive and positive attitude opened up many opportunities for him. Having been recommended to the Royal Shakespeare Company, he became an Assistant Stage Manager there, with responsibilities for productions including ‘The Duchess of Malfi’, ‘Pericles’ and ‘Barbarians’, working over an intense cycle, with rehearsals and performances across Stratford upon Avon, Newcastle, and London, and later worked as a DSM on an international tour of “The Taming of the Shrew”. Ashley found this a great immersive experience. It left him with a love of Shakespeare and he feels privileged to have been a part of the RSC.
Subsequently Ashley received a Japanese government bursary to study in Tokyo for three months, after which his sponsors went on to employ him for a further three years, working on commercial and theatre lighting design projects and productions, travelling throughout Japan and learning about Japanese culture, something that still fascinates him.
On his return to the UK, he took up a post at the Barbican Theatre where he spent 15 years overseeing the flying of international touring productions and project management of large scale capital works within the Grade II listed theatre, most notably working on the replacement power flying system and grid and galleries, in addition to numerous other projects aimed at improving and upgrading the theatre’s infrastructure. He gained significant experience in the client role throughout this time and considers this experience invaluable in his approach to consulting.
Ashley also has practical experience of installing shows in a variety of non-theatre spaces. In 2012 he was invited to oversee the build and building management of ’The Drowned Man’, a co-production between Punchdrunk and the National Theatre, based over four storeys in a disused GPO sorting office, a production which ran for two years.
