Citizens Theatre, Glasgow
Theatreplan is working alongside architects, Bennetts Associates, on a major refurbishment at Citizens Theatre in Glasgow
Improvements include the construction of a new fly tower, whilst retaining heritage elements of the existing system. The theatre gallery seating will be replaced to improve sightlines, increase capacity and increase the proportion of ‘good seats’. Preserving the past whilst securing the long-term future of the Grade B listed Citizen’s requires a sensitive approach to restoration.
The Citizens retains examples of wooden stage machinery and has perhaps the oldest working scenery painting shop in Britain, which has two large frames for backcloths, raised and lowered by their original Victorian drums and shafts. As a result the redevelopment project will require sensitive management.
The project will also seek to incorporate significant improvements to the environment for both visitors and staff. Visitors will benefit from much improved public spaces to create a venue where they can experience much more than a theatre show. There will be purpose-built learning facilities for community activities and workshops, as well as greatly improved access throughout the building.
