Theatreplan worked alongside architects, Bennetts Associates, on a major refurbishment at Citizens Theatre in Glasgow

Theatreplan provided theatre consultancy for the project at the historic Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, which conserved, repaired, and expanded the theatre.
In collaboration with Architects Bennetts Associates, Theatreplan played a pivotal role in the transformation of the Victorian theatre. The project has readied the venue for the future by increasing capacity, comfort and accessibility, and by modernising technical installations, all while preserving the character and heritage aspects of the space.
A key focus of Theatreplan's work was the reconfiguration of audience seating, which increased from just 56 to 139 seats. An additional 36 seats were also created in the stalls, delivering a total gain of 119 seats. These improvements were achieved with careful consideration of existing architectural features, ensuring compliance with modern standards for safety and access.
Beyond seating, Theatreplan led on the design of major technical upgrades. These included the extension of the fly tower to enhance load capacity and access, a new control room, a larger and more flexible orchestra pit, a redesigned stage trap system, and a new mezzanine to optimise the substage area. A tension wire grid was also introduced in the new studio theatre to enable safe working at height, an essential feature for inclusive technical training and youth engagement.
The theatre reopened in August 2025, and programming has now commenced to great success.
