LSO St Lukes, London
A creative learning and rehearsal space for the London Symphony Orchestra.
St Luke's is a Grade I listed, 18th century church building, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, which was converted into an educational and rehearsal facility for the LSO in 2003.
Theatreplan was brought in to specify the lighting and sound equipment and a comprehensive cable infrastructure, used for audio and video recordings, webcasts and broadcasts.
Acoustic excellence is at the core of the design, with different treatments used to ensure a consistent experience within the space and reduce the reverberation for non-musical events. Heavy acoustic banners and blinds help adapt the space for different music styles and size of orchestra, giving the venue the ability to adjust the acoustics as required.
“The elegantly converted Hawksmoor church...whose airy but acoustically engaging Jerwood Hall allows the audience intimate aural contact with the performers.”
